Americans might love Cinco de Mayo, but few know what they’re celebrating https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/opinion/report/050425_cinco_mayo_op/americans-might-love-cinco-de-mayo-but-few-know-what-theyre-celebrating/
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo doesn’t mark Mexican Independence. Instead, it’s meant to commemorate the Battle of Puebla, fought between the Mexican and French armies in 1862 and generally considered a fairly minor event. But its legacy lives on a century and a half later.

@Cristobalm @TucsonSentinel @ai6yr Americans don’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo anyway. It’s Cinco de Drinko.
@chrisnelder @Cristobalm @TucsonSentinel LOL Yeah, THERE IS NO MAYONNAISE INVOLVED
@chrisnelder @Cristobalm @TucsonSentinel @ai6yr aaand my birthday; when I was younger and got carded a lot, I'd go into any vaguely-Mexican restaurant and get free drinks once they saw my DOB.
@TucsonSentinel
Isn’t the independence celebration in September?
@TucsonSentinel fundamentally, just an excuse to get shitfaced
@TucsonSentinel @ai6yr Other than the state of Puebla, Mexico doesn’t even celebrate it.
