Under pressure from physicians groups, an increasing number of states are weighing restrictions barring those holding a doctorate of nursing practice degree from using the “Dr.” title in clinical settings, amid a a shortage of doctors and an explosion of nurse practitioners with doctorates.

Having barged in on PhDs to insist on an M.D. being a Dr, they now want to limit other people’s use of the title.

So long as no one is misled about what "Dr." actually means in those circumstances then it's wrong to restrict it. We have "MD" for a reason.

But of course medical doctors seem to think that honorific is theirs alone and foster the confusion.

@jamesbritt @TucsonSentinel All providers know their scope limitations and will reach for outside help if necessary. I agree, what is misleading here? Further, MD still isn’t enough to demonstrate licensure. I wouldn’t go to a family “Doctor” and request him/her to perform significant surgery.
