America has long turned to immigrants for caregiving jobs, including in child care and other hard-to-staff work, and 1 in 5 child care workers is an immigrant - but Trump’s executive orders threaten that workforce, and the situation feels more dire than in previous years.

While the foreign-born make up 17.7% of the US workforce, they account for 42.4% of home health care aides, said Steven Hubbard, senior data scientist at the American Immigration Council, citing 2023 Census Bureau data. Some 6.4% of them are undocumented immigrants.”
Deportations will also very significantly impact care for the elderly in nursing homes, assisted living and receiving home healthcare.
