The record spending by Democrats in their pursuit of legislative majorities appears likely to be a swing and a miss, as Republicans are poised to actually expand their hold on power in both chambers after ballots were counted Wednesday.

@TucsonSentinel in 2016 there was a similar pattern in the presidential race, HRC outspent Trump nearly 2:1. She did win the popular vote, but just barely. Probably would have lost the popular vote too if Libertarians hadn't siphoned off 2-3x as many votes that they "owed" to Trump compared to Greens' votes "owed" to HRC.
