Behind the bars of the Pima County Adult Detention Center, detainees awaiting trial and inmates serving sentences for low-level infractions were for years dying at a shocking rate. In early 2022, the Tucson Sentinel calculated that the rate of deaths here was higher than it was among those held at the notorious Rikers Island.
