Activists for hand-counting ballots don’t acknowledge drawbacks: More mistakes, time & money https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/nationworld/report/072623_ballot_hand_count_op/activists-hand-counting-ballots-dont-acknowledge-drawbacks-more-mistakes-time-money/
Despite widespread coverage of the follies of hand-counting ballots, the quest to expand use of the method continues. This year alone, there have been 16 bills in 8 states that would ban the use of tabulators. It’s a really bad idea.

Unfortunately, the link doesn't work. I have hand-counted ballots myself so would be interested in reading it.
@TucsonSentinel I used to bang my head against the wall trying to get people to understand that hand counting isn't realistic and if they want to discuss improving the system they should discuss making the machines used more standardized with better accountability for software/etc design (like open source maybe even.) It took me all too long to realize it's certain people advocating for that more for disingenuous reasons more than anything else.
@TucsonSentinel the UK manages to get everything counted by hand overnight in its elections, and the winners take office immediately!
Why is the USA in such a hurry to count votes??
@TucsonSentinel
This #Election worker in WA state agrees that we ALL need votes tabulated by machines that don't run on a black box, proprietary system. Hand recounts are expensive & no more reliable, but many states use vulnerable tabulators or worse wo the option of a hand recount
